Places
I work from life outside, and from photos. For a selection of available prints and original work, click on the pictures below, or go straight to my online shop. I have been known to paint on location in exchange for a stay in a holiday cottage, please contact me if you would be interested!
Below is the composition sketch for the large commissioned landscape painting (above). Also an alternative sketch, which was never executed, with reference photo. I would love to paint this, on the same or larger format (48x24”). Please enquire if you would be interested in discussing commissioning.
Available Devon landscapes
The following works are all Devon based, available to buy. Please note size indicated in description, as the images aren’t to scale with each other!
From high up looking down to the sea at Prawle Point, It was a beautiful day, but so windy up there I decided to give up on oils, and use coloured pencils on heavyweight Strathmore toned paper. My eye was caught by the coastal path wending its way past ancient orthostats (stone boundary markings that look like teeth), and a modern stone mound made by walkers. Salcombe Sands are just visible in the distance. Available ready to frame, A3 size.
Painted from life, just west of Prawle Point, on the South Devon coast. The Lookout is just visible on the horizon. 16x16” oil on canvas board, available varnished ready to frame, with the location composition sketch included free.
Even before the sun rose above the horizon, the light bouncing of the windows and skylights in the cottages was brilliant. Painted from life at silly o’clock, looking East from Prawle Point. 20x20cm oil on canvas board. Available varnished and ready to frame.
Although it was nearly lunchtime, the light was really just starting to hit the path on this April morning. As I painted it was also streaming through the trees behind me, forming beautiful shadows on the path. The local swimmers said this was the best day so far this year for water clarity and weather. Available varnished and ready to frame, oil on canvas board. 12x16”
Oil on canvas board, this is a view of the “Horse’s Head” that juts out into the sea below the Lookout. Painted on location from the South Devon Coastal Path near Prawle. Unframed size 5x7”
Painted from life, this tiny oil on canvas board breaks the compositional rule of thirds, having the horizon slap bang in the middle. I felt the whole scene was awkward, in a nice way, so it seemed appropriate! I had to work quickly, it was windy, choppy, and the sea mist was coming down over the hill.
Oil on canvas board, these ancient boundary markers look like teeth, jutting out from the gorse and grass. Painted on location on the South Devon Coastal Path near Prawle. Unframed size 10x12”

There are plenty birds of prey around Prawle Point, and my guess is that this rabbit was accidentally dropped. Unblemished, but definitely an ex-rabbit, it appeared on the path while we were drawing. I couldn’t resist sketching it in situ, on Kraft paper (like brown parcel paper). Available ready to frame, A3 size.
